Reorder Layers

Layers can be dragged up and down the Layers table on the Chute Faces tabsheet, so related layers can be grouped together instead of sitting wherever the order they were created or imported in left them.

How to move a layer

  1. Press and hold the left mouse button on the layer's row.
  2. Drag up or down to where you want it.
  3. Release the mouse button to drop it there.

Dropping below the last row moves the layer to the end of the list. The moved layer stays selected, so you can drag it again straight away.

A short click still selects a layer as usual – the drag only begins once you have moved the pointer far enough for it to be clearly a drag rather than a click. Holding Ctrl or Shift while dragging extends the selection instead of moving anything, so multi-selecting layers for Merge Selected Layers still works as before.

LayerNo changes when you reorder

The order of layers is recorded by their LayerNo, so moving a layer renumbers it and the layers it moves past – this is what makes the new order stick when the project is saved and opened again. The same set of layer numbers is always reused, so no number appears or disappears; only which layer holds which number changes.

Every face moves with its own layer, so reordering never changes the drawing, the geometry, or the results of a calculation – only the order the layers are listed in.

If you refer to layers by number in your own notes or drawings, remember that those numbers shift when you reorder. The layer's Desc name is not changed by a reorder and is the more reliable way to identify a layer.
