Performing DEM Calculations
Before running the DEM calculation, make sure you have:
- Built your transfer chute model – see Chute Drawing Data Structure.
- Entered the Feed box and
Pulley details.
- Set the DEM Inputs.
The buttons that control calculation, recording and playback are on the main form above the
chute drawing:
- Draw – draws (or re-draws) the chute and feed boxes. Adjust the view
using the drawing settings and mouse
controls first.
- Calculate – starts the DEM calculation; the button changes to
Stop Calculation while running, so you can pause to rotate/inspect the model
and press Calculate again to resume.
- Record Calc – starts recording the calculation for later playback
and reporting (changes to Stop Recording Calc) – see
Recording Calculation
Results.
- Playback... – loads and replays a previously saved recording.
- Record Video... – records the on-screen drawing to an MP4 file
– see Record a Video (MP4).
Suggested workflow
- Start with a low feed rate (tonnes per hour) and a large particle size (150–200 mm) to get a fast first look at the flow.
- Use Stop Calculation to pause and inspect the model with your mouse or the
drawing settings.
- Adjust chute faces and layers as needed, then continue or restart the calculation.
- As a final run, reduce particle size and increase the feed rate towards realistic values
– you'll likely need to re-tune the DEM inputs for the new particle size, see
Fine Tuning DEM Inputs and
DEM Theory.
- Record and play back a run for detailed analysis, especially for a model with many
thousands of particles – leave the calculation running and recording while you do other
work.
- View or print reports and
trace particles.
